Seeing Every Angle: Our Holistic Design Process

Every architectural firm has their own design ethos and process, which are developed over time through their team’s perspectives and experiences. At MoDE, we strive to be highly thoughtful about our design philosophy by regularly self-assessing our processes and their end products. This tendency is reflected in our holistic understanding of design, through which we consider all aspects of a space and how they will impact the people using it.

In today’s post, we’d like to share our firm’s overall design philosophy and how it translates to a thorough, more intentional process.

What Makes Our Design Holistic?

You’ve probably heard of holistic health, the medical practice that takes a whole-body approach by simultaneously addressing a person’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual pillars of health. In architecture–and for MoDE’s team–a holistic approach similarly takes the whole picture of each project into account.

For instance, rather than focusing solely on flashy aesthetics, we consider our projects from every angle, including everything from environmental impact to our end-users health and more. As a firm that focuses primarily on public works projects, this in-depth approach allows us to solve complex problems and make a difference in our community.

In other words, our holistic approach entails asking ourselves a lot of questions as we go, such as:

  • What is the context of this project–the history of the site and its geographic surroundings?

  • Which problems are we aiming to solve through its design?

  • How do we want this building to impact its users–should they feel peaceful or energized, influenced to be socially or physically active, etc.?

By considering the broader effects of each aspect of our design, we can create buildings that inspire, innovate, and enhance the human experience.

Our Process

You might be wondering how our holistic approach translates to MoDE’s design process. The main way it manifests itself is through a team that is continuously learning. We are committed to doing our research, whether that means thorough site visits or interviewing community members about the issues they are experiencing.

What’s more, we encourage our team to be well-rounded by involving each team member in every phase of design. Our whole team takes on every phase together from programming to construction administration. Project knowledge is not limited to project managers; instead, everyone learns from the entire process that comes with each unique project. By encouraging our employees to be well-rounded, we encourage more well-rounded design–or design that’s been considered from every angle.
